What Does The Sign Say

True Life: I Am Turning 30 & I Am Moving Home.

I am still processing this week but I figured writing about it could help.

Fall 2017 I will be only one class and one internship away from being DONE with my masters. However, paying for it is the issue. I won’t have enough credits to qualify for financial aide so I will need to pay for it myself. I could ask my parents for help but I REFUSE. Would they do it?Yes. No questions asked. But I can’t do that to them and I will NOT. I’ve known for a few months this time would come where I needed help with tuition. I prayed. I prayed. I prayed.

I received a sign.

I received a notice from my complex of 4 years that rent is going up about $35 and they will no longer cover water. I know what you’re thinking, water can’t be that much but it’s principle here. My lease is up July 31, 2017. Moving home means I can save about $800+ and pay my tuition. This is hard but yesterday afternoon I began packing and cleaning up. I have to be out within six weeks.

I spoke to a few friends about it and key advice from my bestii, Myra, really hit hard. “I think you moving home is great. We often put too much pressure on what we are ‘supposed’ to be doing or how it looks to others but sometimes you gotta recognize and take advantage of the support your family gives. Save the money and pay for school. It’ll all work out.” My parents are the greatest and always support me. My mom often jokes she will leave my daddy before I ever will. They celebrate 33 years of marriage on June 30th. My Daddy is my ace. He will give me the world but will check my ass, too. They will always have my back. It’s time I take them up on the offer. Their love and support didn’t end at 18 and will not end at 30.

Who wants to move home the same month they turn 30?

I totally shed tears all weekend. Realistically this is the break I need. You see those blogs about people paying down debt quickly because they moved home. I am at peace with this decision now. My parents are happy to have me back home. I lived 4 miles away anyway and saw them several times a week for dinner (and to steal toilet paper and body wash). Sometimes you have to sacrifice for greater good. I want this degree by any means necessary.

I think this is part of my generations problem. We all pretend to be doing ok and are too worried about what the next person is thinking. Guess what? They aren’t paying your bills or in my case, my tuition. I am writing this because this is real life. This is MY life. I ain’t doing this for the gram. I’m not here for the pity. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and actually take the help. I asked God for help with my tuition and he raised my rent. Raising my rent would make me question if I should stay here and make me think about how this will all work out in my budget. Which led me to realize that I can make tuition payments in the amount of my rent. See how that worked out? Don’t ask for help, get signs and ignore them.

I wonder if I can convince my mommy to pack my lunch again?

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,not a result of works, so that no one may boast. -Ephesians 2:8-9

She Who Dares- Detroit

blog, empowerment, Gabrielle High, Glitter & Growth, Life

On Thursday, June 8th, 2017 I had the opportunity to attend the SOLD OUT “She Who Dares-Detroit”. The event featured: Kelli M. Coleman, owner of The Ten Nail Bar, Dezi Santigo, Founder/CEO of Sway’d Style Lounge, Leslie Gordon, Diversity Communications for General Motors, Meagan Ward, Founder of Creatively Flawless and moderated by Jovian Zayne, Founder of the On-Purpose Movement. ALL THAT BLACK GIRL MAGIC IN ONE ROOM! I HAD to attend so I secured tickets for my best friend, Shar, and I. The event was hosted at Detroit Wick in the Eastern Market district downtown.

The event featured Sumptuous Spirits who provided a few cocktails.

This event was easily my favorite I have attended this year. I tried to record the event but I had to sit down my phone and take notes! I didn’t want to miss anything.

How dope is her outfit?

I have about three pages of notes and of course I am here to share the gems with you.

  • Start your day with gratitude and envisioning 10 things that make YOU smile. It could be quotes, your dream car, a Prada bag (HA!) or family pictures- doesn’t matter! Begin your day positively no matter what is going on.
  • End your day with 3 things that you love about yourself and 3 things you accomplished.
  • The idea of perfection is not productive. Remember: Purpose over Perfection and Progress over Perfection.
  • Embrace the pain and grin and bare it all. Remember what is on the other side of the pain.
  • Re-define failure. Failure’s can turn to success stories.
  • Comparison is the thief of joy! Social Media is cool but don’t dwell on it. Do you want something because they have it? Are you inspired or envious? Don’t worry about one up’ing the next person. Focus on you. Don’t do it for the gram. Don’t allow somebody else’s journey to redirect yours.
  • Don’t do what you don’t want to do. Don’t spend time with who you don’t want to. SAY NO! It is OK. Time is valuable, don’t waste it.
  • Don’t get stuck in the infinite loop- your routine. Wake up, rinse, work, sleep, repeat. Break out of it!
  • You can’t be everything to everybody if you’re not enough to yourself- self preservation is KEY! Self care is vital.

I left the event feeling so empowered and energized. It was very much needed and on time for me and my life.

Kelli Coleman, Founder of She Who Dares and The Ten Nail Bar, stated that this is the first of a few more events of this kind! I am super excited for what is to come with this series. I will definitely keep you all posted if I see more events like this and more events hosted by the her group.

What do you think about all that glitter the ladies sprinkled? Will you apply some of these tips? Let me know what you think.

True Life: I Have To Be In A Bikini In Less Than 70 Days

blog, Gabrielle High, Glitter & Growth, Life

Sssoooooo, I have a confession. I am not summer beach body ready. I have mastered the art of hiding it but ya girl is NOT quit there.

I have a trip to Jamaica in the beginning of August so OF COURSE I went and bought all bikinis. Then I tried them on and realized that I cannot hide this fluff on a beach in person. Now for the gram? Yes, I can facetune and filter it up but not so much in person. I would post pictures of the before but… nah!

Upon realizing this I decided to grab my trusty FitBit and hit the concrete. I love cardio but I got slightly lazy over the past few months. I decided I am going to run at least 4 times a week and try to hit the weights 3 times a week. I also have decided to eat better with packing my lunch more and eliminating fast food. I don’t have an issue with water intake actually. I don’t drink alcohol or pop/soda. I just stick to tea and water for the most part. Let’s see how this goes because the ticket is paid for and the resort is reserved. I said it here and aloud so I have to do this, right? RIGHT. I need a gym partner, who is down? Accountability is super key in this journey.

Maybe now is a good time to drop that fast food from my 30 for 30 list? It’s go time!

Speaking of bikini’s…

I got these 4 bikini’s at Target for super cheap! The Target clearance section is your friend. I paid $6-$10 for the bottoms and $7-$12 for the tops! AMAZING DEALS! Listen, over at Glitter & Growth we ain’t balling! I am always here for a good sale or bargain.

More importantly…

I have to also get my skin in order. I don’t see me wearing a face full of makeup on  the beach and out snorkeling. Luckily, I was sent some all natural face products by My House Of Flowers and I trying out and will review for you all in the next few weeks. So far, so great. My face is glowing and dark spots are clearing up. Stay tuned for those reviews! I also started using their soaps and moisturizing butters. I am excited to share it with you guys.

Moral of the story: I need to be photoshop free, natural curls poppin’, face glowing and snatched in less than 70 days. I GOT THIS.

Are you summer time ready? What are your fitness goals? Are you going to save a few dollars and bring your lunch? Let me know! Want to work out with me and in the metro Detroit area? Come on with me.

For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. –2 Timothy 1:7

Hello Kitty Cafe Truck East- Detroit Appearance

Glitter & Growth, Hello Kitty, Life

Happy Monday, Loves!

Saturday The Hello Kitty Cafe Truck- East visited Great Lakes Crossing Mall in Auburn Hills, MI, and, of course, Glitter & Growth was in attendance. I have loved Hello Kitty for YEARS so I was beyond excited to visit the stop. Honestly, I didn’t even know what they had to offer but didn’t matter! Luckily my friend, Serena, joined me on the adventure.

The truck was actually inside of the mall outside of Star Theaters. I arrived at 9:45am and the line was wrapped around the mall. Finally around 1:30pm we made it to the front of the truck to gather some goodies.

I purchased the mug, cookies and the bow bottle of water.

I will likely never open the cookies or use the water bottles and they are just decoration but hey… whatever! Don’t judge me.

What did you do over the holiday break? I hope it was peaceful and relaxing.
