Glitter Down! Send HELP!

I. Am. Stressed. I have been stressed for a few months now. My hair is falling out, my face is breaking out. I can’t get quality sleep, my head hurts. Work is killing me. I don’t have the support I would like. Get me out of here. We have all been there but I refuse to be here any longer.

Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act. –Psalms 37:5

Prayer Works.

I find myself praying more than ever now. I wake up and pray (Thank you, God, for waking me up this morning. You did not have to do it but you did..). I pray in the car before I walk into work (Lord… give me the strength to not choke out.. J/K). I pray before I go to bed (Lord, thank you for blessing me with another day I had not seen before and the lessons that I learned today…). Old people love saying prayers are powerful and I truly believe they are. I can notice the difference when I forget to pray and thank God for the gifts he has given me! When I remember I drop down and pray instantly and things seem to look up for me.

Find Your Happy Place & Be Still.

My happy place is outside of my apartment in front of the lake (Yes, I live in front of a lake. No, I am not balling I just happen to find a deal on an apartment). I go there after running to relax but mainly to BE STILL. Many times we ask Him for help or direction but we REEEAALLLLYYY listen when He answers? Do we even know his voice? Do not be intimidated by the silence.

Peace! Be still! –Mark 4:39

Most people know of Be Still from, “Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10 or from the above scripture from Mark but a lot of people do not know both. Two different meanings of be still. So I challenge you to dig a little deeper and know them both and really analyze “Be Still.”

Self Care.

A few weekends ago I found myself in a dumpster fire at work while on call. In the middle of it all, I stopped and prayed and when it was all said and done I went to get my nails done. Random right? Not really. Self is care is so important. I find joy in getting my nails done every two-ish weeks. It helps me zone out for an hour or two and think about deep decisions such as, nude polish or pinkish nude or white? I had to learn to take time out for myself. I am busy. I am a full-time employee, full-time grad student (who maintains an A average/GPA), volunteer and try to have a personal life. It ain’t easy. I also make it a point to read every few nights. I am currently reading, “The Best Yes” by Lysa Terkeurst and I have the workbook as well. I will do a review once I finish but it’s also ties into this post…

Learn To Say “NO”.

I have problems saying, no. I am getting better at it but it’s hard because I try to be a people pleaser and I want to help everybody and do everything. I can’t. It’s hurting me because I am over extended. The book is helping me 1. learn to say no more and 2. not feel guilty. I typically go above and beyond and I am learning it’s ok to stand in the background at times and not be the first hand up volunteering. Guess what? It helps with my stress, too.

What are your ways of dealing with stress? Drop them in the comments! I am always willing to try other suggestions.

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” — Romans 12:2

April Favs

blog, Glitter & Growth, Life, makeup

Happy May, loves! Once a month I will post my favorite products. Some are high-end, some cost a few bucks. What made the cut for April? These are my favorites for a quick 10 minute or less face.

Please note:  I am NOT a makeup artist. I don’t pretend to be one. I know what works for me and only me. All these products I purchased with my own coins. You are getting my full 100% review.

Trader Joe’s Facial Cleansing Oil

I found this awesome face wash while shopping for groceries one Sunday. I typically use their face products but I decided to try this new cleanser out. Trader Joe’s is keeping with the oil cleaning trend that is popular lately. I typically have to use a two cleansers, one to deep cleanse the makeup off and another to go over it again. With this I have to only use one cleanser and it takes it all off in one step. I use about 2 pumps and rub it on my face and let it sit for about 30 seconds and rinse it off. It even removed my waterproof mascara and liner! It also leaves your face moisturized so you don’t need a heavy moisturizer after. It has argon and coconut oil which are great for your skin and helps keep that glow. This was only $6 and you get a lot of product in the bottle. Let’s hope that TJ doesn’t discontinue this like they do my other favorite products. Who do I write about that by the way?

Tarte Maracuja Oil

Acne is trash. For the most part, I can keep my adult acne under control. I break out once a month-ish but I can’t control that. I recently discovered Tarte’s Maracuja Oil on sale at Ulta. I had $8 so I tried it and now I am in love with this moisturizer. I, like many of my brown skin ladies, have dark marks from oil acne that I could not shake… so I thought! I started using this oil after I wash my face (AM and PM) and my dark spots are fading. BONUS: My skin is glowing. It is a vegan oil that has plenty of vitamins and helps with wrinkles. Now, this is pricey for the full price at $48 BUT good skin care is worth it. A little of this goes a looonnggg way. I have had this little bottle for about 2 months and I am almost out. This oil can also be used in your hair and to remove makeup. They also have an eye cream I am waiting to go on sale. But for now, this oil is holding me over. Just go buy it.

Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Foundation

Brown girls have such a struggle with foundation colors. It’s too dark, too light, too orange, too pink. I kinda gave up on finding a GOOD match. I have some that are close enough, ehhh’ what light will be at the bar? Turn that flash off, girl shades. But finally while wandering at Nordstrom, I discovered Bobbi Brown. She swatched my cheek with 3 colors and the shade “Golden” was a 100% match. FINALLLYYYYY! The coverage is buildable so it can be light or heavier depending on what you are looking for. It is a tad pricey at $50 but again, invest in your face. I do have a few drug store versions but they honestly don’t compare to the color match. I told the lady I wanted a foundation that matched no matter where I was.I typically use about 3 pumps on the back of my hand and use a damp blender to apply. Bonus tip: a damp blender is your friend! It helps blend your foundation and not appear “foundation-y” but smooth and flawless. I typically don’t wear a concealer with it either. I apply it and then dust it with a finishing powder and done. I am not a contour girl so that’s all I do. I do love a good highlight which brings us to…

NYX Duo Chromatic Illuminating Powder “Synthetica”

HONNNEEEYYY, I GLOW with this! I found this strolling the isles at Ulta and for $6, why not? I actually like this highlighter better than my Laura Geller in Gilded Honey that I paid $30 for! It looks orangey but ignore that; it comes off golden on any complexion. The color is super pigmented and will help give you that IG Model glow. It looks very soft and natural and not glittery. I hate when highlighters sneak in glitter! I am too old to walk around with specs of glitter on my cheeks. The Chromatic Powder comes in a few other shades I want to try when Ulta has another BOGO sale but again I stick to what I know, which are golden highlights. I want to step outside my box and maybe try the Twlight Tint which is more an iridescent glow that isn’t natural glow but still pretty. I’ll keep you posted on that one. So far we washed our face, moisturized, added a foundation, some glow and now to the eyes.

NYX Glam Liner Aqua Lux & NYX Matte Liquid Liner

I am not an eyeliner expert but I am slowly getting better. I used to be afraid of eyeliner until I found the right one or two that didn’t run and wasn’t hard to apply. Again, NYX to the rescue. Another find while at Ulta on a BOGO deal. I grabbed the Glam Liner because it has a hint of glitter in the liner and the Matte liquid liner for $6 each. They are the same thing but one has glitter. I love them both. They apply smoothly and don’t fade or run during the day. I also had this one during my flight issues and it stuck around for the long day. I usually apply my eye liner ALL UP IN AND SUPER CLOSE to my mirror which q tips on deck or any errors I make. TIP: Let your mistakes dry before removing them. Wet makeup smudges and makes removal harder. I like liquid over pencil or gel, mainly because I have not mastered those yet, HA. I stick to what I know. Let’s finish these eyes off with this…

Maybelline Volumn Express The Colossal “Big Shot” Mascara

I can’t wear lashes. Not strips, not individuals, not lash extensions. I Just can’t do it. I’ve tried them all but I don’t like how it looks and I can’t handle the application. I stick to my mascara. This is easily my favorite drug store mascara! It is comparable, if not BETTER, than my Tarte Lights, Camera, Flashes Statement Mascara. It gives great length and fullness and LONG WEAR. I had this mascara on during my flight situation a few weeks ago. I put it on around 545am and didn’t take it off until like 730pm and it was still going strong. It also doesn’t fade and give you raccoon eyes which is very important to me. This is my top 3 favorite mascara. The best part? It cost under $10! I grabbed mine for $6 at Target. For my couponing folks, there is always a Maybelline coupon in the Sunday paper! Just go buy it and flutter your eyes all day. Almost done, down to 30 seconds left and we are out the door!

Jimmy Choo “Illicit”

I love Jimmy Choo fragrance. My go to scent is “Illicit”. It is soft with notes such as ginger, rose with honey amber. I love it but you can finish off the look with whatever parfum you love.

What are some of your makeup favorites? What is your daily routine? Let me know! I’m always down to try new products. Keep in mind at Ulta there are always coupons that can be accessed from the website right off your phone and don’t forget to sign up for their e-mails!

Quick reminder: I am running a subscriber give-a-way! One lucky winner with receive a makeup bag with some of my favorite products including a few mentioned above! I See It, I Want It

Glitter & Growth, Life, Uncategorized

I mentioned in an earlier post about my vision board. Let’s walk through a vision board.

A vision board is used to help focus on life goals. They are built of images of whatever you may desire in life.  They help you envision whatever your heart desires. Think of it as the law of attraction. Or think of it as my favorite Beyonce lyric…

I see it, I want it, I stunt, yellow-bone it
I dream it, I work hard, I grind ’til I own it…

Get what’s mine (take what’s mine), I’m a star (I’m a star)
Cause I slay (slay) — “Formation”

Yes, her lyrics apply to life in so many ways! Your vision should be clear and so should your vision board. I don’t advise those vision boards that have every inch covered. But if that’s your thing- go for it. Words means things and thoughts have power. The tongue is a powerful tool. You can speak things into existence. Learn to speak positivity into life and any situation. A part of my NY Resolution was to be more positive and try to remain balanced/calm. It was a total mess at work one day and my COO asked me, how are you so calm? You on anything? I just smiled and said it will all work out. Being upset doesn’t help anybody, does it? She smiled back and said, “fair enough. ” Change your outlook! If you can envision it, you can do it. Visualization is so important in putting your dreams into the universe.

Yes, you can have material items on a vision board. Cuz babbyyyyy, I have a nice halo engagement ring on my board! I also have cute quotes, money stacks, symbols of love and little things that mean something to me and my interpretation. I plan on re-doing my vision board or possibly adding to it in the next six months. My dreams change as my life evolves.

My vision board is clear and simple. It is located in my bedroom right by my door and is the first thing I usually see when I wake up. I literally stare at it and envision the various things displayed. After I meditate on it, I usually pray and start my day. Before I go to bed same thing; meditate and pray. I can tell you that a few things have came to FORMATION. I have listed I wanted to travel more; guess who booked a flight to Jamaica? ME. I have a picture of a girl who is writing… Glitter & Growth was born. Vision boards work, trust me.

Do you have a vision board? What is on it? Send me a picture!

#BeFreeFridays

blog, Glitter & Growth, Life, Uncategorized

“CustomTaylorred is a clothing line inspired by Taylor Patrice Gilbert, a beloved daughter, sister and friend to many. She graduated from Howard University in the spring of 2015 and a month following she took her own life.

‘Be Free’ is a saying that Taylor would commonly write in her notebooks and is the slogan of the brand. It is the message that the Custom Taylorred Family lives by and will spread to the world. This short, yet, meaningful saying will help people realize that you can live the life you envision for yourself but it is up to you to bring your vision to fruition.”   —CustomTaylorred’s Instagram Page

I learned about Custom Taylorred from my best friend, Anya, who was Taylor’s roommate and her best friend, Amber’s little sister. Taylor touched many people’s lives and she is greatly missed. The slogan “Be Free” spoke to me so much, I got it tattooed on my wrist as a friendly reminder. I know Taylor is watching over my bestie and her #HowardFamily.

“#BeFreeFridays is a movement built to inspire others to take the leap of faith in pursuing their dreams.”

Recently they began a new campaign, #BeFreeFridays, and it had a lot to do with beginning Glitter & Growth. I’ve always wanted to blog and share my experiences but I never had the courage to go for it! Honestly, this was one of the sign’s I asked God for. I typically Him for three signs to show me an answer. While scrolling the gram, I saw this and it was one of my last signs to go for it. Yes, I have it on my wrist and yes, I see it daily  but sometimes you need a swift smack to the face as a REMINDER. Funny how life works at times.

The family has no idea I was making this post. This isn’t the typical sponsored shoutout post. I truly believe in this movement and thank them for helping others Be Free, myself included. The brand does great things for the community. They have made donations to Africare, who works to improve the quality of life for the people of Africa, and various donations to organizations within the DC/Philly community.  The brand has awesome sweatshirts, hoodies and hats. Definitely check out CustomTay. I have been eying a new hat and today is payday sssoooo… *Take My Money, Jamin*.

What is your dream? What is stopping you? I hope this encourages you to Be Free.
