Thrift Is Life

Hello! I have missed you all so much!

A few updates: I am done working (Long story, just know I am DONE) and I am moving September 24th to Maryland! YAY! Scared and excited but READY. More on that later in the week. PROMISE. I am pushing my blog into overdrive since, ya know, ain’t much else poppin’ these days in my world.

I have been stressed out lately and I have found a good way to channel my energy without breaking the bank by THRIFTING. Yes, I am one of those people who hits the Sal Val and Value World regularly with the cart full of random items. Lately, I have had some good luck so I wanted to make a post about thrifting with tips, tricks and fun items I have found.

Where Do I Thrift?

I love the Salvation Army and Value World. Both have good deals and usually run specials. Sign up for their e-mails and take advantage of them. I went in one day and it was yellow tags 5 for $5 and another it was 25% off with student ID. Also, they send out good e-mail deals such as spend $25 and get 50% off. I also hit random thrift stores such as St. Vincent de Paul as well. There are also various boutique’s on IG such as @shopvintagebowtique that are good. I usually draw inspo from her page and try to find items in the stores or I buy from her. She is reasonably priced and will bundle shipping (Don’t ask me how I know…). Also, I visited a few Vintage stores in Baltimore such as Keeper’s Vintage. Now, shopping at a vintage store comes with a price tag. I paid a few dollars for some pieces but I supported a black owned business and got some cute stuff. For the most part I try to stick to my local thrift stores.

How Do I Thrift?

I walk in with my hand sanitizer (cuz gross things are there, too), grab a cart and get to going. I usually just wander isle or section to section and grab whatever I see I like or eehhh KINDA like and throw it in the cart. If you think you like it grab it! Thrifting isn’t like regular shopping somebody could come and grab it and it’s GONE. Throw it in the cart and we can figure it out later. Check for quality, holes and stains. Thrifting is mostly final sale so I would hate to get home and discover a gross strain. YUCK. I usually look for crazy colors and patterns and whatever I like. I don’t have things in mind either when I walk in the door. I freestyle it. Sometimes I leave empty handed. Sometimes I spent $30. Don’t expect to walk in and find a vintage Gucci bag but you could. So once I have a haul of stuff I usually find a corner with a mirror and try stuff on and figure out if you want it for real. I can usually weed out half my cart or buy it all. Don’t forget to check out belts and accessories. I have found cute belts and brooches/pins. I don’t thrift shoes. I have no advice for that. Not knocking those who do but I don’t. I follow a few thrift and fashion icon’s on IG and look for inspo on their pages on how to make things work at times. I have grabbed stuff and figured out how to style it later. For $3.99, why pass it up? Now, it’s ugly stuff in the thrift stores, too. I have bought some and made it work. I have bought some and been like, “WYD, GABI?”. Balance. You figure it out.

What’s Fast Fashion?

Fast Fashion is like Fashion Nova, any IG boutique, H & M, Zara and Forever 21 type stores. The quality isn’t there and it’s cheap for a reason. I am not big on supporting them anymore or as much. I am over fast fashion. I have been slowly working it out my closet and replacing it with more thrifted and vintage looks. It’s a reason why that old school Pendleton (google it) blazer is still holding up 15/20 years later and looks amazing styled right. As I grow older I can’t shop at those fast fashion stores as much. Hell, I can’t fit them, too. And honestly, I just love the vintage style lately. I never shopped at Fashion Nova and y’all can have it.  I challenge you to repurpose what you already have or shop thrifted. The average US Citizen throws out 70 lbs of clothes annually. Keep in mind clothes don’t break down. It just sits there in land fills. I didn’t know that until one of my IG BFF (in my head) @TheWorkingBeauty posted stats on it. CRAZY, RIGHT?

Here are some cool pieces I have found

I have found some pretty cool stuff thrifting and I may start a section on my blog for thrifted items you guys can snag for the low. I may also start a thrifting look book to give y’all ideas. Do you thrift? Score anything good? Want me to thrift you something? LOL Let me know.

The Bomb Life: My Brand. My Terms.

blog, empowerment, Gabrielle High, Glitter & Growth, Life, Uncategorized

Happy Sunday, Loves. I posted a few weeks back that I picked up “The Bomb Life: My Brand. My Terms.” by Claire Sulmers, Editor-in-Chief and Founder of FashionBombDaily.com. I grabbed this book on Amazon.com for $17 after seeing it on her IG page.

THOUGHTS?

I would say this book is half biography, half advice with tips/insights. It is only about 200 pages so it’s definitely a quick but good read. I read it once and came back to highlight/sticky note it for the gems and tricks. She talks about the start of her writing career at Harvard (YES! She went to Harvard, yall!) and how it transformed into Fashion Bomb Daily to sneaking into Fashion Week shows. You gotta do what you gotta do!

She breaks down the art of blogging from content creation to learning how to monetize and even suggests working for free for exposure. Marketing is cool but if you don’t have the content to hold your viewers you won’t win. Focus on content and show your brand can hold the audience. We all want to make money too quickly. Hone in on and groom your content first.

One of my favorite chapters is 7: Looking The Part. She goes into her own evolution and digs into grooming yourself, working with smaller designers and how to shop. Our looks can definitely hold us back! It is also important that not everybody wants to see you win. Not everybody will support you, either. Focus on who does and not who doesn’t. Hey, sometimes your friends just want to be your friends; can’t blame them for that. The key is never be an asshole about it.

Another favorite chapter, 10: The New Frontier, has a lot of gems. This chapter she speaks about growth and not being scared. Know when it’s time to GO! Don’t be scared to network, send that e-mail to your favorites and GET IT! Learn to build your team with the right people; not every photographer or graphic designer is best for YOU. She also shines light on fine-tuning social media. At the end she has a section where she writes letters to her younger self.

Overall, I would recommend this book for anybody trying to build a brand. I didn’t reveal the whole book because I do want you to pick it up. This book is right up there with my Kimora Lee Simmons “Fabulosity: What It Is & How To Get It”.

What are you reading these days? I am always down for awesome selections. Maybe we should start a book club? I’m down if you are! Let me know, loves! Also, you may notice that I am changing up when I post. Don’t expect Friday’s or just Friday’s anymore. I gotta keep you on your toes.

True Life: I Have To Be In A Bikini In Less Than 70 Days

blog, Gabrielle High, Glitter & Growth, Life

Sssoooooo, I have a confession. I am not summer beach body ready. I have mastered the art of hiding it but ya girl is NOT quit there.

I have a trip to Jamaica in the beginning of August so OF COURSE I went and bought all bikinis. Then I tried them on and realized that I cannot hide this fluff on a beach in person. Now for the gram? Yes, I can facetune and filter it up but not so much in person. I would post pictures of the before but… nah!

Upon realizing this I decided to grab my trusty FitBit and hit the concrete. I love cardio but I got slightly lazy over the past few months. I decided I am going to run at least 4 times a week and try to hit the weights 3 times a week. I also have decided to eat better with packing my lunch more and eliminating fast food. I don’t have an issue with water intake actually. I don’t drink alcohol or pop/soda. I just stick to tea and water for the most part. Let’s see how this goes because the ticket is paid for and the resort is reserved. I said it here and aloud so I have to do this, right? RIGHT. I need a gym partner, who is down? Accountability is super key in this journey.

Maybe now is a good time to drop that fast food from my 30 for 30 list? It’s go time!

Speaking of bikini’s…

I got these 4 bikini’s at Target for super cheap! The Target clearance section is your friend. I paid $6-$10 for the bottoms and $7-$12 for the tops! AMAZING DEALS! Listen, over at Glitter & Growth we ain’t balling! I am always here for a good sale or bargain.

More importantly…

I have to also get my skin in order. I don’t see me wearing a face full of makeup on  the beach and out snorkeling. Luckily, I was sent some all natural face products by My House Of Flowers and I trying out and will review for you all in the next few weeks. So far, so great. My face is glowing and dark spots are clearing up. Stay tuned for those reviews! I also started using their soaps and moisturizing butters. I am excited to share it with you guys.

Moral of the story: I need to be photoshop free, natural curls poppin’, face glowing and snatched in less than 70 days. I GOT THIS.

Are you summer time ready? What are your fitness goals? Are you going to save a few dollars and bring your lunch? Let me know! Want to work out with me and in the metro Detroit area? Come on with me.

April Favs

blog, Glitter & Growth, Life, makeup

Happy May, loves! Once a month I will post my favorite products. Some are high-end, some cost a few bucks. What made the cut for April? These are my favorites for a quick 10 minute or less face.

Please note:  I am NOT a makeup artist. I don’t pretend to be one. I know what works for me and only me. All these products I purchased with my own coins. You are getting my full 100% review.

Trader Joe’s Facial Cleansing Oil

I found this awesome face wash while shopping for groceries one Sunday. I typically use their face products but I decided to try this new cleanser out. Trader Joe’s is keeping with the oil cleaning trend that is popular lately. I typically have to use a two cleansers, one to deep cleanse the makeup off and another to go over it again. With this I have to only use one cleanser and it takes it all off in one step. I use about 2 pumps and rub it on my face and let it sit for about 30 seconds and rinse it off. It even removed my waterproof mascara and liner! It also leaves your face moisturized so you don’t need a heavy moisturizer after. It has argon and coconut oil which are great for your skin and helps keep that glow. This was only $6 and you get a lot of product in the bottle. Let’s hope that TJ doesn’t discontinue this like they do my other favorite products. Who do I write about that by the way?

Tarte Maracuja Oil

Acne is trash. For the most part, I can keep my adult acne under control. I break out once a month-ish but I can’t control that. I recently discovered Tarte’s Maracuja Oil on sale at Ulta. I had $8 so I tried it and now I am in love with this moisturizer. I, like many of my brown skin ladies, have dark marks from oil acne that I could not shake… so I thought! I started using this oil after I wash my face (AM and PM) and my dark spots are fading. BONUS: My skin is glowing. It is a vegan oil that has plenty of vitamins and helps with wrinkles. Now, this is pricey for the full price at $48 BUT good skin care is worth it. A little of this goes a looonnggg way. I have had this little bottle for about 2 months and I am almost out. This oil can also be used in your hair and to remove makeup. They also have an eye cream I am waiting to go on sale. But for now, this oil is holding me over. Just go buy it.

Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Foundation

Brown girls have such a struggle with foundation colors. It’s too dark, too light, too orange, too pink. I kinda gave up on finding a GOOD match. I have some that are close enough, ehhh’ what light will be at the bar? Turn that flash off, girl shades. But finally while wandering at Nordstrom, I discovered Bobbi Brown. She swatched my cheek with 3 colors and the shade “Golden” was a 100% match. FINALLLYYYYY! The coverage is buildable so it can be light or heavier depending on what you are looking for. It is a tad pricey at $50 but again, invest in your face. I do have a few drug store versions but they honestly don’t compare to the color match. I told the lady I wanted a foundation that matched no matter where I was.I typically use about 3 pumps on the back of my hand and use a damp blender to apply. Bonus tip: a damp blender is your friend! It helps blend your foundation and not appear “foundation-y” but smooth and flawless. I typically don’t wear a concealer with it either. I apply it and then dust it with a finishing powder and done. I am not a contour girl so that’s all I do. I do love a good highlight which brings us to…

NYX Duo Chromatic Illuminating Powder “Synthetica”

HONNNEEEYYY, I GLOW with this! I found this strolling the isles at Ulta and for $6, why not? I actually like this highlighter better than my Laura Geller in Gilded Honey that I paid $30 for! It looks orangey but ignore that; it comes off golden on any complexion. The color is super pigmented and will help give you that IG Model glow. It looks very soft and natural and not glittery. I hate when highlighters sneak in glitter! I am too old to walk around with specs of glitter on my cheeks. The Chromatic Powder comes in a few other shades I want to try when Ulta has another BOGO sale but again I stick to what I know, which are golden highlights. I want to step outside my box and maybe try the Twlight Tint which is more an iridescent glow that isn’t natural glow but still pretty. I’ll keep you posted on that one. So far we washed our face, moisturized, added a foundation, some glow and now to the eyes.

NYX Glam Liner Aqua Lux & NYX Matte Liquid Liner

I am not an eyeliner expert but I am slowly getting better. I used to be afraid of eyeliner until I found the right one or two that didn’t run and wasn’t hard to apply. Again, NYX to the rescue. Another find while at Ulta on a BOGO deal. I grabbed the Glam Liner because it has a hint of glitter in the liner and the Matte liquid liner for $6 each. They are the same thing but one has glitter. I love them both. They apply smoothly and don’t fade or run during the day. I also had this one during my flight issues and it stuck around for the long day. I usually apply my eye liner ALL UP IN AND SUPER CLOSE to my mirror which q tips on deck or any errors I make. TIP: Let your mistakes dry before removing them. Wet makeup smudges and makes removal harder. I like liquid over pencil or gel, mainly because I have not mastered those yet, HA. I stick to what I know. Let’s finish these eyes off with this…

Maybelline Volumn Express The Colossal “Big Shot” Mascara

I can’t wear lashes. Not strips, not individuals, not lash extensions. I Just can’t do it. I’ve tried them all but I don’t like how it looks and I can’t handle the application. I stick to my mascara. This is easily my favorite drug store mascara! It is comparable, if not BETTER, than my Tarte Lights, Camera, Flashes Statement Mascara. It gives great length and fullness and LONG WEAR. I had this mascara on during my flight situation a few weeks ago. I put it on around 545am and didn’t take it off until like 730pm and it was still going strong. It also doesn’t fade and give you raccoon eyes which is very important to me. This is my top 3 favorite mascara. The best part? It cost under $10! I grabbed mine for $6 at Target. For my couponing folks, there is always a Maybelline coupon in the Sunday paper! Just go buy it and flutter your eyes all day. Almost done, down to 30 seconds left and we are out the door!

Jimmy Choo “Illicit”

I love Jimmy Choo fragrance. My go to scent is “Illicit”. It is soft with notes such as ginger, rose with honey amber. I love it but you can finish off the look with whatever parfum you love.

What are some of your makeup favorites? What is your daily routine? Let me know! I’m always down to try new products. Keep in mind at Ulta there are always coupons that can be accessed from the website right off your phone and don’t forget to sign up for their e-mails!

Quick reminder: I am running a subscriber give-a-way! One lucky winner with receive a makeup bag with some of my favorite products including a few mentioned above! They also will receive a few random gifts as well. Want to enter? Just subscribe and I will pick a winner at random on 05.12.17! Good Luck, loves.
