Thrift Diaries: Belts

blog, Gabrielle High, Glitter & Growth, Life, Thrift, vintage

Lately, I have been obsessed with vintage belts! I love belts and how they can add life to any outfit. You can mix them or match them. They can add some color and add some flare.  Don’t forget to check out the accessories section of the thrift store. Here are a few beauties from my closet I snagged from the local thrift/vintage store.

I have found some amazing belts thrifting and vintage hunting. You can wear these beauties with high waisted jeans, skirts, dress slacks and colorful jeans. The options are endless!

Don’t skip out on fun belts. Next up on the Thrift Diaries is… brooches and jewelry! Stay tuned, folks!

Thrift Is Life

blog, empowerment, Fast Fashion, Gabrielle High, Glitter & Growth, Life, Thrift, Uncategorized

Hello! I have missed you all so much!

A few updates: I am done working (Long story, just know I am DONE) and I am moving September 24th to Maryland! YAY! Scared and excited but READY. More on that later in the week. PROMISE. I am pushing my blog into overdrive since, ya know, ain’t much else poppin’ these days in my world.

I have been stressed out lately and I have found a good way to channel my energy without breaking the bank by THRIFTING. Yes, I am one of those people who hits the Sal Val and Value World regularly with the cart full of random items. Lately, I have had some good luck so I wanted to make a post about thrifting with tips, tricks and fun items I have found.

Where Do I Thrift?

I love the Salvation Army and Value World. Both have good deals and usually run specials. Sign up for their e-mails and take advantage of them. I went in one day and it was yellow tags 5 for $5 and another it was 25% off with student ID. Also, they send out good e-mail deals such as spend $25 and get 50% off. I also hit random thrift stores such as St. Vincent de Paul as well. There are also various boutique’s on IG such as @shopvintagebowtique that are good. I usually draw inspo from her page and try to find items in the stores or I buy from her. She is reasonably priced and will bundle shipping (Don’t ask me how I know…). Also, I visited a few Vintage stores in Baltimore such as Keeper’s Vintage. Now, shopping at a vintage store comes with a price tag. I paid a few dollars for some pieces but I supported a black owned business and got some cute stuff. For the most part I try to stick to my local thrift stores.

How Do I Thrift?

I walk in with my hand sanitizer (cuz gross things are there, too), grab a cart and get to going. I usually just wander isle or section to section and grab whatever I see I like or eehhh KINDA like and throw it in the cart. If you think you like it grab it! Thrifting isn’t like regular shopping somebody could come and grab it and it’s GONE. Throw it in the cart and we can figure it out later. Check for quality, holes and stains. Thrifting is mostly final sale so I would hate to get home and discover a gross strain. YUCK. I usually look for crazy colors and patterns and whatever I like. I don’t have things in mind either when I walk in the door. I freestyle it. Sometimes I leave empty handed. Sometimes I spent $30. Don’t expect to walk in and find a vintage Gucci bag but you could. So once I have a haul of stuff I usually find a corner with a mirror and try stuff on and figure out if you want it for real. I can usually weed out half my cart or buy it all. Don’t forget to check out belts and accessories. I have found cute belts and brooches/pins. I don’t thrift shoes. I have no advice for that. Not knocking those who do but I don’t. I follow a few thrift and fashion icon’s on IG and look for inspo on their pages on how to make things work at times. I have grabbed stuff and figured out how to style it later. For $3.99, why pass it up? Now, it’s ugly stuff in the thrift stores, too. I have bought some and made it work. I have bought some and been like, “WYD, GABI?”. Balance. You figure it out.

What’s Fast Fashion?

Fast Fashion is like Fashion Nova, any IG boutique, H & M, Zara and Forever 21 type stores. The quality isn’t there and it’s cheap for a reason. I am not big on supporting them anymore or as much. I am over fast fashion. I have been slowly working it out my closet and replacing it with more thrifted and vintage looks. It’s a reason why that old school Pendleton (google it) blazer is still holding up 15/20 years later and looks amazing styled right. As I grow older I can’t shop at those fast fashion stores as much. Hell, I can’t fit them, too. And honestly, I just love the vintage style lately. I never shopped at Fashion Nova and y’all can have it.  I challenge you to repurpose what you already have or shop thrifted. The average US Citizen throws out 70 lbs of clothes annually. Keep in mind clothes don’t break down. It just sits there in land fills. I didn’t know that until one of my IG BFF (in my head) @TheWorkingBeauty posted stats on it. CRAZY, RIGHT?

Here are some cool pieces I have found

I have found some pretty cool stuff thrifting and I may start a section on my blog for thrifted items you guys can snag for the low. I may also start a thrifting look book to give y’all ideas. Do you thrift? Score anything good? Want me to thrift you something? LOL Let me know.

My House Of Flowers Mini Review

empowerment, Gabrielle High, Glitter & Growth, Life, skin care

Hello, loves. I was sent a very generous package from My House Of Flowers with some BOMB products to try out.

Background on this amazing family ran company:

Mrs. Glass is a mother of two, who has worked in the floral and gardening business for over 20+ years. With the help of her daughters , husband and extensive  knowledge of plants  she created, My House Of Flowers. My House Of Flowers started out as  a casual floral business  for weddings  and special  occasions. With the use of her family built greenhouse,  she was able to successfully harbor all the products required to run a business by herself alone. Years later Mrs. Glass began to experiment  with other plant based creations. What started out as weekly experimental creations blossomed into pounds of tested products. For two years with  no intention of commission, every batch was made , tested and given away as gifts. With the confidence  of her well tested family and extended support system,  Mrs. Glass has finally  decided to extend her garden and business of love to the world  of profit and gains.

First Up…

Paradise Face Mask

As I stated a month or so back my goal was to get my skin together because while makeup is fun in the summer time it gets HOT and I don’t like to melt. The paradise mask is a mix of Moroccan clay, Bentonite clay, charcoal, Tumeric, Brazilian Green Tea and Silicia. This mask is pretty cute because it comes dry and you mix it up. They send you a mixing jar, an application spoon and directions. I mixed mine with a dash of organic apple cider vinegar to maximize the results. Everything is better with ACV!

I LOVE THIS MASK! I have been using it for over a month now and it’s by far my favorite mask. I used to use Amazon Healing Clay and ACV but it’s drying and as it drys you cannot move your face which is rather annoying. This mask drys but doesn’t super dry. I leave it on for about ten minutes and wash it off with water. Also with clay masks they are a pain to clean up after because they turn into clay so it takes time end energy to get it all off. Again, not an issue here with this masks. Simply rinse off with water and the clean up is just using a paper towel to clean the sink. I have definitely seen a difference in my skin with dark marks and acne. I don’t have a lot of issues with acne but once a month but even those pimples are staying away. It is also a detox mask that will bring out the dirt and oil in your skin to help detox. I will be ordering this mask as soon as my samples are out.

Tumeric Face Soap

My goal is to get this skin glowing without highlighter and this face soap is doing its part! The soap is made with tumeric, goats milk, organic honey, rose hip seed and orange bitter oil. Basically, a bunch of good stuff. I have been using this face cleanser twice a day for the past month and have noticed a difference in combination with the mask. It’s super moisturizing and gets off makeup as well. I typically have to double cleanse on days where I put on a full face. NOPE! Just lather the bar up and rub it in and gets all the makeup and dirt off. I do let it set on my face for about 30 seconds and then I use my Olay ProX Advanced Cleansing Brush to help exfoliate. Added Bonus: I have been using this bar for a month and it’s still A LOT left. I would suggest their soap lather bag for safe keeping when your not using it. Soaps can dry or run out quickly if you don’t properly store them.

Shea Butter, Oatmeal, Milk & Honey w/Luffa Scrub

I am all for exfoliating my skin. It helps with keeping your skin soft by removing the dead skin and smoothing you out. This little gem is a soap with shea butter, oatmeal and milk with honey bar with a luffa in the middle. GENIUS IDEA. I use it in the bath to scrub/cleanse my skin and my feet. I refuse to be that girl with the fresh pedicure and dry skin on her feet. YUCK! This product gets the job done and helps keep you smooth and fresh. The luffa is an added bonus because it helps buff out the rough skin and with the shea butter soap it gives it the moisturizing pieces it needs- it’s all about balance. Again, I would recommend the soap lather bag for storage so it doesn’t run out quickly and not dry up on you. I have had this for a month and again, it hasn’t ran out! I don’t have a picture of it fresh out the box because I got too excited and used it. Don’t judge me, I love a good skin care product. Lemme alone, folks.

Overall, these are BOMB products that I will gladly give 5 Sprinkles Of Glitter (5/5). Guess what? They have a special discount code for y’all! Use code: Glitter&Growth for 10% off. I have a few more of their products I am trying out still so keep your eyes open for those! You can go visit them HEREI also sprinkled Links through out the posts. The Bomb Life: My Brand. My Terms.

blog, empowerment, Gabrielle High, Glitter & Growth, Life, Uncategorized

Happy Sunday, Loves. I posted a few weeks back that I picked up “The Bomb Life: My Brand. My Terms.” by Claire Sulmers, Editor-in-Chief and Founder of FashionBombDaily.com. I grabbed this book on Amazon.com for $17 after seeing it on her IG page.

THOUGHTS?

I would say this book is half biography, half advice with tips/insights. It is only about 200 pages so it’s definitely a quick but good read. I read it once and came back to highlight/sticky note it for the gems and tricks. She talks about the start of her writing career at Harvard (YES! She went to Harvard, yall!) and how it transformed into Fashion Bomb Daily to sneaking into Fashion Week shows. You gotta do what you gotta do!

She breaks down the art of blogging from content creation to learning how to monetize and even suggests working for free for exposure. Marketing is cool but if you don’t have the content to hold your viewers you won’t win. Focus on content and show your brand can hold the audience. We all want to make money too quickly. Hone in on and groom your content first.

One of my favorite chapters is 7: Looking The Part. She goes into her own evolution and digs into grooming yourself, working with smaller designers and how to shop. Our looks can definitely hold us back! It is also important that not everybody wants to see you win. Not everybody will support you, either. Focus on who does and not who doesn’t. Hey, sometimes your friends just want to be your friends; can’t blame them for that. The key is never be an asshole about it.

Another favorite chapter, 10: The New Frontier, has a lot of gems. This chapter she speaks about growth and not being scared. Know when it’s time to GO! Don’t be scared to network, send that e-mail to your favorites and GET IT! Learn to build your team with the right people; not every photographer or graphic designer is best for YOU. She also shines light on fine-tuning social media. At the end she has a section where she writes letters to her younger self.

Overall, I would recommend this book for anybody trying to build a brand. I didn’t reveal the whole book because I do want you to pick it up. This book is right up there with my Kimora Lee Simmons “Fabulosity: What It Is & How To Get It”.

What are you reading these days? I am always down for awesome selections. Maybe we should start a book club? I’m down if you are! Let me know, loves! Also, you may notice that I am changing up when I post. Don’t expect Friday’s or just Friday’s anymore. I gotta keep you on your toes.
